This story, featured in the AP, reports on a study that found that interval training is a more efficient way to get into shape than what most people consider a workout. I can’t say this information really surprises me.
It’s far better to alternate extreme effort and rest – honestly it’s how we are designed. In case the title of this blog doesn’t clue you in, I am a big believer that the physical form of mankind hasn’t really changed all that much since we were all living out in the wilderness. If you think about this issue from that standpoint, it makes much more sense to base our fitness on short bursts of intense activity (hunting, gathering, even building) followed by rest. Even in the modern world, it has been shown that short breaks in activity can prevent a lot of wear and tear on the body.
